Watchtower · Browser extension

Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 16, 2026

Watchtower is an independently developed browser extension for monitoring user-selected ChatGPT workflows, diagnosing task interruptions, and organizing downloaded ZIP files. This policy explains how the extension handles information. Watchtower is not affiliated with or endorsed by OpenAI.

1. Information the extension processes

The extension does not intentionally collect passwords, payment card data, complete conversation transcripts, authentication cookies, or request and response bodies. It may process technical information associated with a selected ChatGPT session while providing its advertised functions.

2. Why information is used

Watchtower uses this information to monitor long-running tasks, detect activity and interruptions, provide locally visible diagnostics, support recovery actions, find eligible ZIP attachments, manage downloads, prevent duplicate downloads, and preserve user-selected settings and recent download history.

3. Where information is stored and transmitted

Watchtower's settings, selected-chat records, task telemetry, and download history are stored in the user's local Chrome extension storage. ZIP files are saved through Chrome's Downloads system in the configured subfolder. Diagnostic reports are exported locally when the user requests them.

The reviewed version of Watchtower does not contain a developer-operated server for collecting conversation content or monitoring records and does not automatically transmit those records to the developer. To check availability and service health, the extension can make HTTPS requests to ChatGPT and OpenAI's public status service. Ordinary network metadata, such as an IP address, may be visible to those services as part of those requests. Downloads initiated through ChatGPT are provided by ChatGPT/Chrome under their applicable terms and privacy practices.

4. Sharing and sale of information

Watchtower does not sell user data, share it with data brokers, or use it for targeted advertising. Information is not sent to the developer automatically. If you choose to export a diagnostic report and share it with another person, that sharing is under your control. Such reports can contain conversation titles, URLs, filenames, and technical metadata; inspect them before sharing.

5. Retention and deletion

Diagnostic events and download-version records are stored locally with bounded histories. User preferences and selected-chat information may remain until you clear the relevant Watchtower data or remove the extension. You can remove extension-stored information by clearing Watchtower's local data or uninstalling the extension. Downloaded ZIPs and exported diagnostic files are separate files and are not automatically deleted when the extension is removed.

6. Browser permissions

Watchtower uses browser permissions for its disclosed functions, including access to the selected ChatGPT tab, task and network monitoring, Chrome debugging input for supported download controls, notifications, local storage, recovery actions, and Chrome download management. These permissions are not intended to monitor unrelated browsing as a separate product feature.

7. Security and user control

Watchtower is designed to handle monitoring records locally and to use HTTPS for applicable external requests. The user chooses the monitored conversation, can change settings, and can export or clear available diagnostics. Since diagnostic exports may contain sensitive metadata, store and share them carefully.

8. Chrome Web Store Limited Use disclosure

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. Watchtower uses accessed data only to provide or improve the user-facing monitoring, diagnostic, recovery, and ZIP collection functions. It does not use such data for personalized advertising, creditworthiness assessments, or unrelated purposes.

9. Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated when Watchtower's features or data-handling practices change. The effective date at the top will be updated when material changes are made.
